There is a special kind of angst which comes from having too many options.
Two schools with great facilities for your children are down the road. Which one to choose?
Two companies want to partner with you for selling their products. Both products are great, which one do you decide to sell?
I’m not sure I have an answer, but I know that long and committed conversation helps to make an important decision.
Eckhart Tolle says there is no past or future except as memory or anticipation in your mind. Options are sometimes seductive because they are new and shiny, like a new iPhone. However, maybe we shouldn’t be so quick to change something if it is already working.
Not all good options are better than what we already have.
I just turned 37 a couple days ago. To paraphrase Marilyn Monroe “…makes a guy think….”
Approaching (hitting?) middle age for me means a few things, but the overriding feeling I have is that, obviously, time is fleeting. So what to do with fleeting time?
Here’s an idea. We live in an extraordinary moment when everyone has access to the sum knowledge of humanity. Stanford university is giving its courses FOR FREE online.
Khan Academy is teaching pretty much anything in a really great format and also FOR FREE through its app.
With this in mind, I’m learning maths on Khan and I’m reading up on the links between health, sustainability and interior design/architecture in a new book by Esther Sternberg.
Staying curious. That’s what I want for my 38th year and for any more time I get on this amazing earth. This sounds pithy but it’s true.
Happy Sunday Chimps.
Today was a good day in a good week. But I’m only realizing now after supper. Strikes me that it often goes that way.
When you are busy, focused and enjoying yourself, almost by definition you stop noticing time pass and stop analyzing what you are doing.
Only looking back now am I surprised at a good patch.
Here’s hoping for more blind, ignorant, closed off, unthinking good patches 😉
I had to catch the early flight to Johannesburg this morning for a bunch of meetings. It was dark and my kid was still asleep.
I’ll be in the big bad city all day and then arrive home late tonight after my child has gone to bed. Sometimes life is not creative bliss.
However, I believe it is always fun to work and have meetings if you focus on the people. Today I will meet 2 new people and one who I have only met once before. The work side of things is important and I had to prepare for the meetings, but it flows easier if I focus on understanding and enjoying the different people. It makes it easier for me to leave home in the dark!
Also, the more exposure I have to different people and places, the more cannon fodder for writing and creativity.
If the only thing you have to write about is how tired you are, or how terrible things are these days, or how little hope you have for the future, then I am not interested.
Give me people who take action over those who post despair to make an impact.
Give me someone who is creating something beautiful over someone who is scouring and searching for something to complain about, all the while playing it safe every day.
Rant over. Time to go make something awesome.
